May Newsletter: Blackmail, the number 3 and OJ with the police
When is blackmail not blackmail?
Here in the UK we’ve had another political sleaze story. It centred around a Member of Parliament called William Wragg. The headlines screamed that he’d been blackmailed into providing phone numbers of numerous fellow MPs. However, have a look at what the man himself said, what do you notice?
Mr Wragg doesn’t say he was blackmailed. He said he was worried he could be blackmailed. A very different thing. In his words, he handed over the numbers, not because he was being blackmailed or even threatened with blackmail, but because, in his head he feared it.
ME and YOU
Here’s a quote from an actress speaking about her divorce…
This is a classic of the kind. You might read it and think she and her husband had grown apart. However, she doesn’t say that. She talks in general about what happens to people, not her: “Sometimes PEOPLE grow apart”. She then continues to say she’s hasn’t grown. Whatever happened, she’s not being honest about it.
Three is the liars number?
Have you ever heard the theory that THREE is the liars number? Apparently, when someone is lying about something the go to number is 3. Eg “There were three men who all ran in at once” or “I only had three drinks” or “we drove for three miles”.
I’ve never been able to prove it as a valid theory so I’ve tended not to use it. But when I got the chance to road test it… I went for it!
