Brain Laundrie’s written confession that he killed Gabby Petito has been made public.
You can read it in full here, be warned it may be difficult for some people to read.
I’ve been asked for my thoughts on the words in it. I don’t intend to do a full analysis, but I have a couple of observations to share.
Control
His confession is all about control. I noted at the time Gabby was missing that Laundrie was very big on control.
Look at what he tried to control in these words:
How we see him. He wants us to see him as a loving person and someone who admits his mistakes.
The narrative on how Gabby met her death.
How we treat others like his family and Gabby’s family.
Even his punishment, he controlled how he paid for killing Gabby, not society.
Not believable
I don’t believe his version of events around how Gabby died. Her injuries occur conveniently “off-stage” and there is no detail on how she got them. His description of those injuries and the suffering they were causing it also vague and distant. There is nothing here that convinces me this is a truthful statement as to what happened.
The only part I find believable is that she was cold and in pain. Is it possible he caused the pain and inflicted the injuries on her? Yes. The fact he goes to great lengths to tell us he doesn’t know the exact injuries she has suggests this is possible.
That’s it. Brian Laundrie, a liar, controlling, and most importantly a killer. Gabby was truly unlucky such a man was in her life.
What do you spot in his words? Have a discussion in the comments below.
1. It is addressed to Gabby, but he abandons that in the second paragraph in favor of addressing a wider audience. Who is his intended audience?
2. He is trying to sell a very unbelievable story. To whom and why?
I have killed myself by this creek in the hopes that animals may tear me apart. That it may make some of her family happy.
But he hadn't when he was writing this.
It seems to be a very long suicide not, and very self-serving.
It is a fact that he didn't kill himself immediately afterwards, but drove across the country to his parents. What happened there that convinced him this was his best way out? Did he write the note on his own initative or was he prompted?
IDK. There is so much convincing language, storytelling. Are these really the last thoughts of a man shortly before shooting himself?
A short update: having studied this more, I’m still certain that Gabby was cold but probably post death.
